Nobody asked for this
Mythology is a subject that is open for interpretation. Yet some like Elon have their shorts in a knot over Christopher Nolan‘s casting choices for his masterpiece The Odyssey. Anyone who has seen this movie can attest to the level of craftsmanship and human creativity that went into this creation. It is insulting when someone with no artistic talent believes that they can conjure art better than those who create it. Requesting a movie is not even in the same universe as making a movie. A lesson that Elon is about to learn the hard way.
AI generative video has no soul
This is a fact. I understand that Elon is trying to prove some kind of point. But using AI to do it seems lazy. As an artist. This offends me more than the casting choices.
If you’re so bothered by this movie – make your own. You’ve got the money. What you lack is the talent. AI art creates the illusion that you are making something when all you are doing is requesting something. Believe me when I say – there is a difference.
What an age we live in where you can simply order up a replacement to suit your own tastes. Movies are art. Art is work. AI generative video is the opposite of that. Now any dumb dumb believes they’re the next Spielberg because they now how to describe something. Being an Artist (a real Artist) requires the ability to take a vision and bridge the steps to make it a real thing that others can see and be moved by it. Not everyone can do that. Christopher Nolan did that. This movie is an achievement.

Elon Musk claims that Grok AI will make a “historically accurate” Odyssey film… then links to AI footage that appears to depict Odysseus with foam earplugs. Talk about historically accurate. He has also expressed a willingness to give Mel Gibson $100 million for another kind of adaptation. See what Vanity Fair thinks about this one.

See the movie – Leave the slop where it belongs
Christopher Nolan not only refused to use AI generative art, he also created this movie using some of the most incredible practical effects with state of the art IMAX equipment. Not to mention an incredible cast of some of the best actors in the world today :: full stop ::
There is no doubt that the casting choices have created division. Especially around those who are reacting to historical accuracy. There’s a Cyclops in it. I think that there is some wiggle room to be accurate. Besides, this is not a documentary about what you imagined, this is a person’s interpretation. A good one. It should be accepted as such.
Film is worth fight for
A movie is not just what you see projected (either on a screen or in the palm of your hand) it’s a production story unto itself. A collaboration of humans creating stories. Capturing real emotions to move other humans. AI art is here to stay. It’s designed to replace and rewrite human artistic culture. Requesting images (and full length movies for that matter) speeds up the take over. When the richest man in the world enters the conversation the game changes entirely. AI historians will remember this moment as significant. How significant? Time will tell.
